Vacancy – Translator, Interpreter & Cross-Cultural Worker

we-are-hiringDoras Luimní is currently recruiting for the position of Translator, Interpreter & Cross-Cultural Worker.

The overall objective of the post is to provide interpretation, translation and cross-cultural support for recently arrived refugees. It will involve assisting staff, volunteers and relevant services to interact effectively with the new arrivals via interpretation and translation of documents.

Translator, Interpreter & Cross-Cultural Worker

  • Job Title: Translator, Interpreter & Cross-Cultural Worker
  • Reporting to: Resettlement Support Worker, Doras Luimní
  • Hours of work: 35 hours per week (excluding one hour lunch break).
  • Place of Work: Doras Luimní Wexford sub-office, and occasionally at head office in Limerick
  • Objectives of the Role: To provide interpretation, translation and cross-cultural support for recently arrived refugees. It will involve assisting staff, volunteers and relevant services to interact effectively with the new arrivals via interpretation and translation of documents.

Journeys – A new primary school teaching resource

journeysJourneys is a new education resource for primary school teachers with an interest in teaching children about migration, refugee protection and migrant rights.

Doras Luimní contributed to this resource as co-authors, in partnership with the DICE project and the Curriculum Development Unit in Mary Immaculate College. Activities in the resource are cross-curricular and the resource takes a whole-school approach.

Seminar on Arts participation among young refugees

new-frontiersA symposium exploring arts participation of young refugees and asylum seekers will be taking place in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick on 31st May 2017.

Speakers include: Laura Hassler (Musicians Without Borders), Prof Helen Phelan (UL), Dr Charlotte McIvor (NUI Galway), Seán Love (Fighting Words), Dr Rachel Hoare (TCD), Tadhg Crowley (The Glucksman Gallery) and Dr Ailbhe Kenny (MIC).

The speakers and facilitators will present current research and practical approaches with a view to opening up a critical debate on how to seek new pathways for the arts with displaced children and young people. Through a sharing of expertise, the symposium will explore themes and topics relating to: arts education, arts displacement, participatory arts, arts/cultural identities, intercultural arts, traditional arts, as well as the role of the arts among young refugees and asylum seekers.

Africa Day 2017

africa-day-logoPreparations are underway for Africa Day 2017 in Limerick. This year there will be several events throughout the city & county celebrating diversity and culture in all its forms.

Date: 22nd to 28th May 2017

 

Key events include:

  • Monday 22nd May: Official Opening in Limerick City Hall.
  • Wednesday 24th May: Intercultural Soccerfest, St Clements College, South Circular Road from 6:30pm.
  • Thursday 25th May (Africa Day): Seminar with World Café round table discussions on integration and African/Irish Identity.
  • Sunday 28th May: Variety show in the Milk Market from 1pm to 4pm.All events are free of charge and all are very welcome to attend.
